DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING FOR GENRE FICTION

I help fiction writers turn plot tangles into page-turners. Specializing in mythic fiction, romantasy, paranormal romance, and urban fantasy.

I work with fiction writers preparing to self publish or seeking editorial support before querying agents, as well as those who want coaching or accountability to reach their writing and publishing goals.

Services I offer include:

Manuscript Evaluation

A manuscript evaluation is a high-level review that highlights what’s working, what needs attention, and what next steps will move your book forward.

Developmental Edit

A developmental edit focuses on the big picture (plot, characters, pacing, conflict, etc.) offering in-depth feedback to help shape and strengthen your manuscript from the ground up.

Coaching

Designed for authors who want support to stay on track with their writing and revision goals.

ABOUT

MEET HEATHER

I'm a developmental editor specializing in fantasy and romance. I work with indie authors preparing to self-publish as well as writers hoping to land an agent. I love strong female protagonists, queer main characters, and the kind of expansive, myth-soaked stories that stay with you long after the last page has been turned. I have a soft spot for folklore and fairytales, whether centuries old or freshly reimagined, and I love writers who breathe new life into timeless tales and tropes.

My editorial training includes coursework through the University of Washington and the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA). I’m a member of the EFA as well as the Northwest Editors Guild. I regularly update my skills through classes and conferences. I read deeply in the genres I edit, which means I understand the conventions, reader expectations, and story mechanics that make them feel like home to the readers who love them—and what breaks that spell.

Hiring an editor is a huge investment in your time, your money, and your story—and I take that seriously. I bring years of professional experience in administration, communication, and project management at companies like Amazon and Nordstrom. For you, this translates to a professional working relationship: commitment to excellence, clear communication, collaboration, and no surprises (e.g. If a timeline is at risk of shifting, you'll hear about it immediately. Not at the last minute!) You'll always know where your project stands.

Home for me is the gorgeous Pacific Northwest, where I spend my free time reading, gardening in chaos mode, wrangling my dogs Jax and Rocco, and getting sassed by a steadily growing flock of hens (and one tiny rooster who croaks like a frog).
